MADRID — Protesters have blocked roads and stopped commuter trains as Catalonia faces a common strike within the wake of unprecedented controls within the area by Spanish central authorities to crush an independence bid.

Amongst dozens of roads blocked, protesters minimize the site visitors on the AP7 motorway north of Girona, one of many principal arteries connecting France and Spain.
