A harrowing rape scene from ITV cleaning soap Emmerdale won’t face an Ofcom probe regardless of producing 101 complaints.
Some felt the scene, during which Rhona Goskirk was raped by Pierce Harris simply hours after their marriage ceremony, was not appropriate for broadcast earlier than 21:00.
However the media watchdog mentioned the scene “was prone to have been consistent with what most viewers have been anticipating”.
“We took into consideration the broadcaster had issued a warning and the scene was restricted,” it mentioned in an announcement.
“Emmerdale is understood to have lined many difficult social points.”
The scene, proven on 24 April, was the fruits of a long-running storyline involving Rhona, performed by Zoe Henry, and her abusive companion Pierce, performed by Jonathan Wrather.
“I do know some have mentioned it is an excessive amount of for a 1900 time slot,” Emmerdale producer Iain MacLeod instructed Metro after the episode was broadcast.
“My response to that’s Emmerdale has all the time lined hard-hitting topics and I believe cleaning soap has a duty to cowl them.”
